NSW Police has unveiled what is likely to be one of Australia's slowest cop cars – a Suzuki Jimny XL five-door, capable of 0-100km/h in about 15 seconds.

Unsurprisingly – given its performance – it will not be an operational highway patrol car with lights and sirens, rather it is a "community engagement" used for display at local events in the Lake Macquarie area of NSW.

It is on loan to the Lake Macquarie Police District Crime Prevention Unit from Suzuki Australia, so it "comes at no cost to the community."

Nicknamed 'Sergeant Jim', it wears high-visibility NSW Police graphics, but is not an operational vehicle capable of pulling motorists over and issuing fines.

"Sergeant Jim is more than just a vehicle, it’s a conversation starter," Michael Pachota, Suzuki Australia automobiles general manager, said in a media statement.

"In times when national crime rates are a topic of discussion, we saw an opportunity to contribute positively at a local level."

It will be used in the Lake Macquarie area of northern New South Wales, home to 221,000 residents.

A wide range of vehicles have been loaned to NSW Police districts for community liaison purposes in recent years, from a Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan to a new Subaru WRX.
