Lamborghini may be forced to postpone its first mass-market electric vehicle (EV), the production version of the Lanzador concept from 2023, due to shifting market conditions.

Speaking to Autocar, Lamborghini CEO Stephen Winkelmann said the brand still had time to make a decision on timing of the new electric car, which was originally meant to launch in 2028.

"We still have seven months of window to decide what to do next," Winkelmann said. "We are very flexible and we are constantly thinking when it should be.

"We already postponed the car [from 2028 to 2029], because we saw that the adoption curve of the electrification around the globe is [below] the forecast we had a couple of years ago."

However, Winkelmann is still promising the launch of the Lamborghini EV "by the end of this decade".

In addition to its first EV, the all-electric version of the new-generation Urus SUV – Lamborghini’s second EV – is also delayed, now targeting a 2035 release.

Originally expected close to the turn of the decade, Lamborghini will instead lean on plug-in hybrid technology for its next-generation large SUV, which shares the same underpinnings as the Porsche Cayenne.

"We want to have a new generation again as a plug-in hybrid," Winklemann told Autocar.

"This is something very important for us and for the customers. And they were very happy to hear about this."

The new-generation Urus is expected to arrive around 2029, given the first car launched in 2018, but its twin-under-the-skin Cayenne will be available in full-electric form sooner – given Porsche has recently been testing the model.

Despite this, Lamborghini’s slow move to EVs, its flagship Revuelto supercar and Temerario sports car are both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
