Honda has joined the growing list of car brands reevaluating their approach to electric vehicles.

A report from Nikkei Asia outlines the latest in a growing number of electric product changes, with Honda set to cancel its flagship large electric SUV.

Honda’s product strategy appears to vary by market, with the brand only recently revealing an electric city-sized hatchback aimed at the European market set to go on sale in 2026.

The North American market, however, has seen a slowing demand for electric vehicles, with Honda joining brands like Toyota, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz in altering future EV product line-ups.

Honda initially planned to launch seven electric vehicles between 2026 and 2030, with a large SUV originally slated to hit the market in 2027.

Plans for that vehicle have now been scrapped entirely, according to the report, however Honda remains on track to add a new electric sedan and medium SUV to its range.

The North American market was set to be the primary audience for the large SUV, but declining electric vehicle sales and recent policy changes that will abolish federal tax credits for EVs by the end of 2025 have contributed to the decision.

Honda currently sells just one electric vehicle in North America, the Prologue, which is classed as a mid-size SUV in the USA and is built on an electric platform developed by General Motors.

Honda outlined changes to its future product strategy in May 2025.

The revised global strategy sees hybrid vehicles take the focus in Honda’s future product portfolio, with EVs still included but their proportional representation reduced.

Vehicles Like the Honda 0 sedan and Honda 0 SUV, which were shown as concept cars at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2024 and 2025, remain on track for production – set to be built at Honda’s Ohio factory.

Unlike the Prologue, the future ‘Zero Series’ cars are set to use an in-house-developed EV platform with a focus on packaging efficiency and weight reduction, through more compact battery and powertrain components.

Honda’s decision to scrap the large SUV follows Toyota’s delayed rollout of an electric three-row SUV, similarly citing falling demand in the category.
