Geely has shown off its second vehicle for the Australian market – the Starray EM-i – just five months after the arrival of the electric EX5 SUV.

The five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV is due on sale within the last three months of 2025, but is currently on display in select Geely dealerships across the country.

The Starray EM-i uses the underpinnings of the existing EX5, similar in width, height, and the distance between the front and rear wheels, but is 125mm longer nose to tail.

Measuring 4740mm long, 1905mm wide, 1685mm tall and with a 2755mm wheelbase, the Geely Starray EM-i puts itself into competition with other medium SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and MG HS Super Hybrid.

Instead of being solely powered by a 160kW electric motor, it combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine (73kW/125Nm) with a 160kW/262Nm electric motor to produce a total of 193kW, which is sent to the front wheels.

It claims a WLTP hybrid driving range rating of 943km with a full 51-litre tank and a charged 18.4kWh battery, listed as slightly smaller than the 19.1kWh pack offered in Chinese models, and is capable of a claimed 83km solely on the electric motor.

Much of the internal technology featured in the EX5 has been incorporated into the Starray EM-i, including a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with built-in satellite navigation and vehicle voice control.

It also brings a few gadgets like vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle powering capabilities, LED exterior lighting, flush-fitting door handles, power-adjustable and heated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, power tailgate, and a 16-speaker Flyme sound system.

In terms of safety, the Starray EM-i features seven airbags, a suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and a 360-degree camera, with additional details to be finalised closer to its Australian launch.

Pricing is yet to be announced, but based on Chinese prices being $AU3000 less than that of the EX5, the Starray could come in around $37,000 before on-road costs.

At a sub-$40,000 price point for a plug-in hybrid medium SUV, the Starray EM-i could undercut all of its competition, with the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid currently holding the most affordable spot at $39,990 drive-away.

"We do expect big things like we have with the EX5. The Starray EM-i is competing in a very crowded segment, medium SUV, but we're very excited to see what we can do," said a Geely Australia spokesperson.

Despite being an all-new brand in Australia, the EX5 has amassed 1845 sales since its launch in mid-March 2025, reaching the top five of the best-selling fully-electric vehicles in the past two months.

Following its second model launch in Australia in just six months, at this rate, Geely is on track to launch at least one more new nameplate before 2026.

Full pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the Starray EM-i's arrival between October and December 2025.
