Chery Australia’s new 2026 Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid SUV is now the market’s most affordable plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), priced from $39,990 drive-away.
This undercuts the previous title holder, the BYD Sealion 6 available from $42,990 before on-road costs or around $45,600 drive-away in Victoria, as well as similarly-sized rivals such as the GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV ($55,990 drive-away), Leapmotor C10 REEV ($43,888), and Mitsubishi Outlander (from $57,290 before on-road costs).
Available in two grades, the entry-level Urban for $39,990 drive-away and the Ultimate positioned at $43,990, the 2026 Tiggo 7 ditches the Pro moniker from its predecessor, as well as the 137kW/275Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Instead, the new model pairs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a single electric motor and plug-in hybrid powertrain – the former producing 105kW/215Nm while the latter punching out 150kW/310Nm, but no combined output figures have been revealed.
Drive is sent to the front wheels via a single-speed ‘Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT)’.
With an 18.3kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the Tiggo 7 is rated to travel up to 93km on electric power alone, based on less stringent NEDC testing.
However, with the petrol engine coming into play in hybrid mode, Chery claims the Tiggo 7 has a 1200km cruising range before needing to refill and recharge.
The Chinese brand also claims fast-charging speeds of up to 40kW, meaning the battery can recoup 30-80 per cent in around 20 minutes.
The system can also be operated in one of four drive modes – pure electric, series, parallel, and energy recovery so driver’s have options for when to engage electric power.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather seats, a six-speaker sound system, power-adjustable drivers seat, LED exterior lighting, and dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.
In terms of safety, there are eight airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, tyre pressure monitor, and a reversing camera.
Stepping up to the Ultimate adds a panoramic sunroof, interior ambient lighting, heated and cooled front seats, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, wireless smartphone charger, rear privacy glass, and surround-view monitor.
Order books open in July for the 2026 Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, and when compared with outgoing Tiggo 7 Pro that was available in SE and SE+ trim, the Urban and Ultimate grades are respectively $10,000 more expensive.
