Volkswagen's sporty Spanish offshoot is preparing to launch its new flagship SUV, the mid-size Terramar with the option of plug-in hybrid power.

Cupra is set to launch its largest petrol-powered SUV yet – the 2025 Terramar – in Australia next month, priced from $58,490 drive-away.
The first two models to arrive will be the entry-level S mild-hybrid and mid-grade V in July 2025, ahead of the flagship high-performance VZ in September, and the VZe plug-in hybrid sometime in 2026.
Prices start from $53,990 plus on-road costs, or $58,490 drive-away – dearer than a Tiguan 110TSI Elegance ($50,690 plus on-roads), which lacks mild-hybrid tech, and features such as a head-up display, but broadly similar in size and equipment.
The flagship 195kW, all-wheel-drive VZ is priced from $73,490 drive-away – splitting the $61,490, 180kW front-drive Cupra Formentor VZ and $70,790, 228kW all-wheel-drive Formentor VZx.
Cupra says the Terramar is differentiated from other cars in the crowded mid-size SUV class through "style and design", and "a clear focus on ... driving dynamics."
It markets the new model as "significantly larger" than the Formentor, even though the Terramar is only seven centimetres longer (4519mm) and about two centimetres wider (1863mm).
The primary difference is in height – 1584mm for the Terramar, against the Formentor's 1520mm – including a flatter, more practical roofline.
All models are equipped with a 15-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power-adjustable heated front seats, a head-up display, 360-degree camera, power tailgate, and tri-zone climate control.
Powering the base Terramar S is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 110kW and 250Nm, matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
It is aided by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system – which can provide a boost under acceleration, or turn off the engine when coasting – for claimed fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres.
The V adds a 150kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, bolted to the same seven-speed auto, but an all-wheel-drive system instead of mild-hybrid tech for 0-100km/h in a claimed 7.1 seconds, and fuel use of 7.2L/100km.
VZ versions upgrade to a 195kW/400Nm version of the 2.0-litre engine, cutting the 0-100km/h acceleration time to 5.9 seconds.
The plug-in hybrid is expected to combine the 1.5-litre turbo engine with an electric motor and 19.7kWh battery for a combined power output of 200kW, and rated for 100km of electric driving range.
Unlike the less powerful VZ, the VZe is set to be front-wheel drive.
