Slowing demand for large, high-priced, battery-powered pick-ups has led Ram to slam the brakes on plans for an electric Ram 1500.

Ram has cancelled plans for an electric version of its full-size 1500 pick-up to rival the Tesla Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Lightning due to low expected demand in its US home market.
Once mooted for Australian showrooms, the launch of the electric Ram 1500 REV was repeatedly delayed from an initial target of late 2024, to as far back as mid-2027.
Amid a slump in demand for large electric pick-ups – from the Cybertruck to more conventional Ford and Chevrolet competition – the project has now been scrapped entirely by Ram.
"As demand for full-size battery-electric trucks slows in North America, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue development of a full-size BEV pickup," Ram's parent company Stellantis said in a media statement.
The electric Ram's name, the 1500 REV, will now be carried by the range-extender plug-in hybrid variant, formerly known as the Ramcharger.
"As part of this, Ram is renaming its REEV-powered pickup to Ram 1500 REV (formerly Ramcharger). This vehicle will set a new benchmark in the half-ton segment, offering exceptional range, towing capability and payload performance," Ram said.
The range-extender Ram 1500 has also been delayed, from an initial 2025 calendar-year arrival in the US to early 2026, Motor1 reports.
It will be powered by electric motors developing 494kW/834Nm, and use a 3.6-litre petrol V6 solely as a generator to charge the pick-up's 92kWh battery, with no direct connection to the wheels.
The result is a 1110km total driving range rating, 6350kg braked tow rating, and 4.4-second 0-60mph (97km/h) acceleration claim.
Plans for an even-longer-range version capable of an electric-only 800km from a 229kWh pack were reportedly scrapped earlier this year to focus work on the standard-range version, as well as the range-extender.
The latter would have been on par with the all-electric Ram 1500, which was promised to offer a 565km driving range from a 168kWh battery pack.
Ford F-150 Lightning sales tallied about 13,000 in the first half of 2025, down from 15,345 a year earlier.
Ram's electric pick-up was once slated for a conversion from left- to right-hand drive for sale in Australia after its US launch.
"Ultimately, yes," then Ram boss Mike Koval told Australian media including Drive at the New York motor show in April 2023. "There may be staggered approach [launching after the US market], but it will be very close. We're not excluding anybody out of the gate."
