A substantial price cut and feature upgrade are hoped to supercharge interest in Zeekr's smallest car, which has slipped into the shadow of the popular 7X.

Demand for the Zeekr X electric car is forecast to triple after the price was dropped between about $5500 and $13,000 as part of a styling, technology and equipment update.

The Zeekr X (665) was last year outsold nearly two-to-one by its latter 7X (1206) sibling, even though deliveries of the latter didn't commence until October – when the smaller car has been available since late 2024.

While Zeekr does not expect its smallest car to now match the runaway success of the 7X, demand is expected to pick up significantly.

"We knew that when we launched X in the market, it was at a different time, and we had to price [the updated X] to the current market," Zeekr Australia head of digital Andrew Stamatakis told Drive.

"Obviously, it is quite sharp, but we've priced it to the current market. We are averaging about 30 to 40 [MY25 sales] a month; we hope to be in the triple digits every month from here on out."

The Model Year 2026 update has cut the price of the entry-level Zeekr X RWD to $47,900 drive-away, a reduction between $5565 and $8113 compared to its predecessor, which itself received a $5000 cut earlier in its life.

It now undercuts the Kia EV3 Air and BYD Atto 3 Premium, two of its closest rivals, and grows the gap to the entry-level 7X, which is priced from about $62,000 to $65,000 drive-away, depending on the state of registration.

When the Zeekr X launched in Australia priced from $54,900 plus on-road costs – or $60,000 drive-away – before options in late 2024, the likes of the Kia EV3 and MG S5 EV did not exist in local showrooms.

Meanwhile, the Zeekr X AWD now starts from $57,900 drive-away, down $9826 to $12,987, depending on the state of registration.

Asked if the price of the outgoing Zeekr X held it back from the attention it could've garnered, Stamatakis said: "Certainly, when we look back on the launch from today's market, we can draw that conclusion.

"I think, at the time, it was priced to that market. Certainly, if we had our time again, would we have changed it? Potentially.

"But we think that the [MY26] car is compelling; the changes are only adding to that compelling factor, and the price now will leave nothing for compromise for customers. So we think it's going to sell very well."

Power doors – with fully-electric opening up front, and a push-button latch with manual opening at the rear – are a new option on the all-wheel drive Zeekr X, after their availability on the 7X Performance.

"Auto doors are something that aren't very common in [that] segment, and we're very proud of being able to offer really innovative technology at this price, in this segment," said Stamatakis.

"I think the uptake on X is to be seen."
