Which cars have V2L in 2025?

While electric and plug-in hybrid cars have been touted as the antidote to global CO2 emissions – with some countries introducing stricter emissions legislation to incentive car makers to produce more EVs – battery-powered models also have the potential to revolutionise the energy industry through bi-directional charging.

In a nutshell, bi-directional charging is when electricity is stored and shared between EVs and electronic devices (vehicle-to-load), as well as homes (vehicle-to-home) and even the power grid (vehicle-to-grid) – with the car essentially functioning as a mobile generator that can be used in different situations.

Though experts have said this technology is game-changing, it’s worth noting it’s still in its infancy phase in Australia, and not every electric vehicle sold in the domestic market offers bi-directional charging.

But which models currently offer bi-directional charging in Australia? Here’s what you need to know.

Which cars offer V2L in Australia?

A spokesperson for Chinese marque BYD – the eighth most popular brand by volume in 2025 – told Drive, “All BYD vehicles are both V2G [vehicle-to-grid] and V2L [vehicle-to-load] compatible”.

Depending on the model, BYD's V2L technology has a power output range between 2.2 to 2.4kW.

“BYD’s V2L technology has already been incredibly impactful, powering campsites, worksites, and even homes during natural disasters,” they added.

V2L is the term used to describe an electric vehicle’s ability to share power between the car and another EV, as well as any other electronic device, like mobile phones and laptops.

As previously reported by Drive, a pair of BYD Atto 3 owners utilised the car maker’s V2L technology in an emergency situation where one of the drivers depleted their car’s range just a few kilometres from the nearest public charger.

Rather than call their emergency roadside assistance, the other BYD owner was able to transfer some electricity to the depleted car through a 10-amp aftermarket charging cable.

After 30 minutes, the depleted Atto 3 recouped a 2 per cent charge, enough for the stranded owner to get to the nearest public charging station.

Chinese fledgling brand Deepal offers V2L as an optional extra on its S07 electric SUV, though the car maker has not published its maximum power output.

It's worth noting that S07 owners must purchase a separate V2L charging cable if they want to use the car's V2L functionality to externally charge other devices.

For reference, the Deepal S07 is priced from $53,900 before on-road costs. But at the time of writing, the Chinese marque is currently offering drive-away pricing on the electric SUV, which can be had from $49,990 in a Lunar Grey colourway.

Chinese marque Geely is also one of the car makers that offer V2L functionality in Australia. Its debut model in the EX5 electric SUV offers V2L charging that has a maximum power output of 3.3kW, which can power a commercial coffee machine, for example.

Additionally, a spokesperson for the brand confirmed the Geely EX5 also offers 'vehicle-to-vehicle' (V2V) technology, which allows the direct transfer of electricity from one model to another, "which can help another EV get back on the road".

The Geely EX5 is priced from $40,990 for the base-spec Complete and tops out at the EX5 Inspire, which starts from $44,990 before on-road costs.
