If the likes of phone brand Xiaomi entering the electric-car market wasn't odd enough, next to join the list is a vacuum maker from China looking to rival Bugatti.
Electric Cars
A manufacturer of vacuum cleaners has become the latest Chinese company to signal an intention to build its own cars – with none other than a high-end electric supercar to rival Italian exotics.
Dreame Technology – founded in 2017 – claims to be number one in the cleaning sector in more than 20 global markets, and refers to itself as the "Apple of China".
Reports out of China, including local publication Iyiou, claim Dreame is already employing 1000 people to build a supercar for release in 2027.
It has reportedly identified the Bugatti Veyron as its target, and to make the “world’s fastest car” – even though the Veyron went out of production a decade ago, and is no longer the world's fastest car.
The once-record-holding Bugatti climbed to the top of the charts in 2005 with a top speed of 407km/h from a 736kW quad-turbocharged W16 engine, but has since been overtaken, with the record now held by the 499km/h Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut.
Autocar reports the company could establish a factory in Germany to build the vehicle.
The high-tech appliance company says it does not intend to “build from scratch”, rather claims it will build on the “shoulders of giants in Chinese manufacturing”.
“The luxury automotive sector has been missing a truly intelligent electric hypercar brand,” Dreame said in a written statement spotted on social media.
“While traditional ultra-luxury brands like Bugatti and Bentley have been slow to embrace electrification and intelligence, Dreame will redefine what constitutes ultra-luxury in the next automotive era.”
Dreame is most known for its robotic vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and air purifiers.
This is not the first time a household appliance name has attempted to build a car.
Tech giant Apple was working on a car of its own for a decade before scrapping the project in 2024, after attempting to incorporate autonomous driving technology not yet ready for the road.
Another Chinese technology maker, Xiaomi – which has invested in Dreame – makes phones and other electronics alongside its newly-launched electric cars.
