The Sealion 8 – BYD's first seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV – is now available to pre-order, with deliveries to customers due in the coming months.
Prices are yet to be announced, but BYD has hinted the vehicle will be more expensive than the entry-level Sealion 7 electric SUV, which is priced from $54,990 before on-road costs.
The Sealion 8 will be on sale in three model grades.
The range starts with the Dynamic front-wheel drive, consisting of a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce 205kW and 315Nm combined according to the BYD website. It is paired with a 19kWh battery to provide 103 km of claimed all-electric driving range.
The all-wheel-drive models begin with the Dynamic AWD, featuring a larger 35.6kWh battery, bringing all-electric driving range up to a claimed 152km and lower fuel consumption.
Compared to the base variant, the AWD will take on a 200kW/350Nm rear electric motor, bringing total power output to a quoted 359kW and 675Nm, and will replace its 20-inch alloy wheels with 21s.
The top-spec Premium AWD shares the Dynamic AWD’s power and torque figures, but is expected to step it up in the interior with more luxury features.
BYD has confirmed the Premium will offer a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 21-speaker sound system, and massage seats in the first and second row, plus wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, and a 15.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Sealion 8 can be pre-ordered now on the BYD website, with a $1000 refundable deposit, ahead of pricing being announced. Customers can expect delivery over the coming months.
