Chery Australia has rechristened the Omoda 5 small, now called the C5 that comes in line with a price rise for the base model and a reduction in choice for buyers.

Now available in two forms, the entry-level Urban and top-spec Ultimate, the new C5 is positioned at $29,990 drive-away and $34,990 respectively.

This makes the point of entry $2000 more expensive than before, but the C5 Ultimate matches the outgoing mid-tier BX grade in terms of price and the top-spec EX is now discontinued.

However, with the name change and new badging also comes an updated look featuring a new grille and a restyled rear end, while its boot capacity has increased by 10 litres to 370L.

There have also been mechanical changes too, with the Omoda 5’s torsion beam rear replaced by a multi-link rear set-up, while the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is swapped for a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Like before however, powering all versions of the C5 is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, producing 108kW/210Nm that is sent to the front wheels.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dual 10.25-inch screens for infotainment and the instrument cluster, wired Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, six-speaker sound system, and acoustic front glass.

Stepping up to the Ultimate adds 18-inch wheels, red-painted brake callipers, eight-speaker Sony sound system, dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, heated front seats, synthetic leather seats, a wireless smartphone charger, and a sunroof.

All versions of the E5 also come with "a full suite of advanced driver-assistance systems", which includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and a reversing camera, while the flagship grade also scores a 360-degree camera.

Chery will also rename its Omoda E5 electric car to the E5, with pricing and specs to be confirmed at a later date, as it positions the Omoda as its own sub-brand going forward.
