Outspoken Tesla CEO and active social media poster, Elon Musk, has given his biggest hint yet at a future SUV based on the Tesla Cybertruck pick-up.

In a post on social media platform X, which he also owns, Musk responded to a user’s plea for a minivan by saying, “Something way cooler than a minivan is coming”.

Musk had originally posted about the Cybertruck’s family suitability, pointing to the three IDOFIC mounting points in the rear seat, to which X user Leah Libresco Sargent responded, “MAKE A MINIVAN, ELON. [emphasis original]”

Musk responded by revealing that something ‘cooler’ was on the way.

While the outspoken Tesla CEO is no stranger to online reveals and product hints, a clear picture of what the new model might be is unknown.

Shortly after the original post, Musk reposted a response to unofficial AI-generated renders of a three-row SUV based on the Cybertruck – strongly suggesting such a vehicle is on the brand's radar.

Already nicknamed the CyberSUV by Tesla fans, a number of renderings have already begun to spring up online.

In the wake of slowing sales following its initial launch excitement, Tesla could be looking to amortise the investment in the Cybertruck’s platform, and the massive three-row large SUV market in North America could be the highest-volume way to do so.

Another option is US sales of the Model Y L, a stretched version of the brand's top seller already available in Australia and China, with a 150mm longer wheelbase and 173mm longer body than a regular Model Y, plus three rows of seats.

Images have recently surfaced at Tesla’s Texas factory of a partially assembled vehicle with a longer body and taller rear window aperture than the Model Y currently sold in the USA.

It’s possible that the Model Y L could join Tesla’s US production schedule, adding it to the US line-up.

The timing for a larger Model Y in the US lines up with the recent end of production of the larger, three-row Model X, leaving a gap in the line-up for a six- or seven-seat model.

So far, the Chinese-built version of the Model Y L has only been offered with a six-seat layout and individual captain’s chairs in the second row.
