BMW is planning to launch 30 new M performance models in the next two and a half years, to coincide with a massive styling and technology overhaul of the German car giant's line-up.

“We're working on up to 30 new models that will come out in the next two and a half years. So, we're quite busy right now,” BMW M CEO Frank van Meel told Australian media recently.

The 30-car tally is expected to include flagship high-performance M models – such as the M3, M4, and M5 – alongside lesser 'M Performance' vehicles, such as the successor to today's M340i sedan.

While details on the future model range have not been given, the electric BMW M3 will be one of them, with van Meel hinting at a launch date to the press amid recent reports production is due to begin in March 2027.

“[I’ll be] glad to have this discussion probably in one and a half years once you have driven the all-electric ones,” the executive said.

The electric M3 – as detailed earlier this year – is set to be sold alongside a new generation of the petrol version, expected in the second half of 2028.

BimmerPost forum user and reputable BMW insider 'ynguldyn' has shared information of other new-generation M vehicles that are likely to fill out the company's showrooms.

New iterations of the X5 M, X6 M, X3 M and X4 M are reportedly in development – the latter pair with electric power – while a new 4 Series is due in 2028, on which a future M4 replacement can be based.

The M sector of the organisation also covers M Performance vehicles that will likely see a refresh of existing models that cover almost all of BMW’s line.

Once electrification development for the M3 is complete, it is expected to share a similar pathway to the petrol version's powertrain family, where the same twin-turbo inline six-cylinder powerplant is used across numerous models.

A facelift for the twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid M5 range – across sedan and Touring body styles – is also in development, likely to form two of M's 30 new models.

Further information on future models will be released over the course of 2026 and 2027, with the brand being quite transparent through its social media channels about upcoming models, including the well-documented development of the electric M3.
