2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GXL FWD review

Toyota’s very popular crossover had a recent facelift and the usual associated price rise. The mid-spec GXL has always been a winner, but is the front-wheel-drive version a bit underdone?

Summary

With hybrid power and economy, a reasonable return for the 2026 price increase and Toyota reliability and ease of ownership, it’s one for those who don’t want to have to think about car ownership too hard. But it’s also fun to drive, even in front-wheel-drive form.

2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GXL FWD

The Toyota Corolla Cross arrived in the dark days of the pandemic with a hefty splash, immediately building up a fat order book that took a long time to clear. It was a long-awaited addition to the Toyota line-up, ready to take on Mazda’s acclaimed CX-30 and everyone else who had a small SUV on the go.

Now nearly four years later, the Corolla Cross scored a facelift, bringing its front end into more familiar territory and adding a whole heap of equipment, particularly in the GXL.

I was always of the opinion that the all-wheel-drive GXL is the sweet spot of the range and turned my nose up a little at this front-wheel-drive version, so this should be an interesting exercise.

How much is a Toyota Corolla Cross?

With its $960 price rise, the GXL is now $41,190 before on-road costs. While we’re used to price rises, we’re not as used to how much extra has gone into this particular trim level.

The GXL ships with 17-inch alloys, 10.5-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, leather steering wheel and shifter, synthetic leather and fabric upholstery, dual-zone climate control, wireless AppleCarPlay and now wireless Android Auto, 360-degree-view cameras, 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, auto LED headlights with auto high beam, power folding mirrors, six-speaker audio, keyless entry and start, and because it’s front-wheel drive, a space-saver spare.

New to the GXL – and mostly inherited from the previous Atmos spec – is a wireless phone charger, heated front seats, auto wipers and a better 360-degree camera. Is that all worth $960? I don’t know. Is it better than nothing for the price rise? Yes indeedy.

Toyota Corolla Cross best deals

The best place to start is the Toyota website, which will help you find a dealer and let you know about any specific deals. If you do go to a dealer, it’s worth driving both the all and two-wheel-drive versions of the Corolla Cross you’re looking at.

The Toyota Corolla Cross has been around for a while now, so you can find some for sale on Drive Marketplace both new and used.

How big is a Toyota Corolla Cross?

As the name suggests, there is a lot of Corolla hatch in the Cross, but it’s bigger in every direction. It’s only a few centimetres off 4.5 metres in length, which means it’s not particularly small, but there’s a smaller car in the Yaris Cross if that’s what you need.

One of my nerdier fanboy moments is my appreciation for Toyota’s front seat game. They don’t look like much, but they are very comfortable and supportive. The manual adjustment might sting a bit if you’re sharing the car with someone else, but apart from that, they’re excellent.

The mix of synthetic leather and fabric is a bit naff – I say commit to one and in that case, fabric, because the seats in the GX are great – but that’s a tiny niggle.

Drivers get a digital instrument cluster that’s on the smaller side, but it’s perfectly fine and very clear with plenty of information available.

Front seat occupants have two cupholders and narrow but useful door pockets, with a space for a bottle in each. The centre console bin is modest but useful, and the same can be said for the phone charging pad and the glove box. I like that there’s a second rubberised pad for another phone, although it doesn’t charge so you might need to use the USB-A or USB-C point.

While a bit plasticky, it’s a great cabin because everything is easy to hand, and there is an abundance of physical switches for commonly used things like climate control. The piano black surrounds for the HVAC and air vents are a bit tacky, but it all feels like it will last forever.

New for the 2026 Corolla Cross is a tweaked centre console and shifter with a mix of piano black and silver trim. Nothing spectacular, but a nice enough change from the old one.

As it’s just a facelift, there’s no extra leg room in the back, which remains a sore point in the Corolla Cross compared to, say, the Seltos, Kona or Chinese competitors like the Haval Jolion. It’s tight rather than claustrophobic behind my driving position – I’m just under 180cm tall – but the soft seatbacks will mean that if you are on the lanky side, it won’t hurt.

Rear seat passengers score two USB-C ports – you don’t get any in the GX – and an armrest with two cupholders. The doors have small pockets and a bottle holder. The seats themselves are comfortable if a little squidgy on longer journeys.

Boot space also remains the same, but across the range it varies by a few litres. The GXL front-wheel drive has 425 litres and a space-saver spare, so it’s not a bad compromise. The all-wheel-drive boots are significantly smaller and don’t have any kind of spare at all.

Does the Toyota Corolla Cross have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

The Corolla Cross, if memory serves, was an early debutante of the updated Toyota media software now seen across the entire empire, Supra excepted. It’s easy to use, but as I always say – and regular readers are probably sick of me saying – the lack of home screen is a little jarring.

Also jarring is the current Toyota Connected Services offering of just one year for free before expecting a subscription fee. This Silicon Valley-brained idea is infecting a number of car companies who think they’re becoming software companies and it would be nice if they didn’t. Tesla’s sales are tanking, so stop thinking that’s the way to go.

Connected Services itself is a perfectly worthy collection of enhanced sat-nav, remote control and monitoring functionality and a few other features in the Toyota phone app that help you keep track of the car. But as a subscription cost? Probably not.

Wireless Apple CarPlay has been around for a while, but for MY26 is joined by wireless Android Auto. CarPlay is mostly well integrated, but for some reason doesn’t mute the content when you’re talking to Siri, which is distracting and can create mildly disastrous text message responses if you’re not careful. Lana del Rey fans know what I mean.

Alongside all the phone connectivity you get DAB and AM/FM through the six-speaker system that is adequate but nothing more.

Is the Toyota Corolla Cross a safe car?

The Toyota Corolla Cross received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in 2022. The facelift changes nothing and the rating stands until December 2028.

The Corolla Cross scored 85 per cent for adult occupant protection, 88 per cent for child occupant protection, 87 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 83 per cent for safety assist technology.

All Corolla Cross variants have dual frontal airbags, front-side airbags and two curtain airbags. A driver's knee airbag is also standard, as is a front-centre airbag that is designed to prevent front-seat occupants from clashing heads in a side impact. All of these add up to eight airbags.

The kids are looked after with two ISOFIX anchors on the outboard rear seats and three top-tether anchors.

What safety technology does the Toyota Corolla Cross have?

The Corolla Cross has a good safety specification and all of it worked really well.

A Toyota thing is the Curve Speed Reduction as part of the adaptive cruise control. It’s kind of annoying in daylight on roads you know well, but I can absolutely see how useful it would be on unfamiliar roads in foul weather and at night. It does reduce your workload and means the cruise can stay on more of the time. It works perfectly, but I think it slows down a bit much in clear, dry weather.

Everything else also worked without fault, and it sure was a breath of fresh air to drive a well-calibrated safety suite. The addition of new around-view cameras, handed down from the Atmos in upgraded form, is a nice touch as vision over the shoulder isn’t spectacular when you’re manoeuvring.

How much does the Toyota Corolla Cross cost to service?

An insurance estimate came out at $1670.29 per year based on a comparative quote for a 35-year-old male driver living in Chatswood, NSW. Insurance estimates may vary based on your location, driving history, and personal circumstances.

That seems reasonable to me, coming in at under 5 per cent of the new car value (before on-roads). It’s not cheap, however.

Servicing comes around every 12 months/15,000km, which is what most manufacturers and models offer in this segment. Toyota’s flat $275 per visit for the first five years is beaten only by Honda’s headline price of $199 per service. Either way it’s cheap compared to its Korean and European competition, although the Honda wants you in at the dealer every 10,000km, which means the price difference evaporates when you’re a higher-miler.

Is the Toyota Corolla Cross fuel-efficient?

Toyota claims a combined-cycle average of 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres, which looks pretty good against the perennial favourite, the RAV4, which I’ve had return 4.5L/100km in the real world. Weirdly, I have never got a Corolla Cross under 4.5, with the best 4.8 and on this occasion, 5.2L/100km.

To be fair to the Corolla Cross, it was starved of highway running and operated in Sydney’s oppressive end-of-summer dunking of heavy humidity and the resulting terrible traffic.

If you can hit Toyota’s number, you’ll cover an astonishing 857km from the tiny 36-litre tank – most tanks in cars this size are at least 40L. With my number, you’ll still get almost 750km off that tiny tank. So while the tank is small, the almost unbelievably good fuel economy means it doesn’t really matter.

What is the Toyota Corolla Cross like to drive?

I mentioned my preference for the all-wheel-drive GXL up top, and there are two good reasons for it. First is the clever way the rear wheels are electrically powered and you can move about quietly in EV mode for longer. I had great fun working that out a few years ago. It’s nothing like a deal-breaker, but I think it’s cool.

Second is that the rear suspension is a more sophisticated and therefore more supple independent rear end. Well, I say therefore, Toyota’s engineers got it right and it’s just better – I have driven pretty awfully engineered independent rear end equipped cars in my time.

Here in the front-wheel drive, and as in the GX, you have torsion beams at the rear. While the French somehow make them almost imperceptible in all but the sharpest of bumps, Toyota hasn’t quite nailed the ride quality of Peugeot or Renault.

It’s acceptable, but if you’ve been in an all-wheel drive, you’ll notice. Having said that, the Corolla Cross is more fun to drive than you might expect, with good grip in the corners even if the tyres aren’t exactly top-flight.

The hybrid drivetrain is obviously a key point in this car. With 146kW of power to pull over 1500kg with a single adult onboard, it’s pretty sprightly. It’s hardly a quiet engine when worked hard by the CVT, which sends it towards its 6600rpm power peak while the electric motor fills in as the 188Nm of torque arrives from the engine. Annoyingly, Toyota doesn't provide a combined torque figure.

One point to which I was interested to pay attention is the way this particular car transitions between regenerative braking and physical braking. Previous outings in the hybrid front-wheel drive uncovered an awkwardness in that changeover not present in other Toyotas and, yes, it’s still here. I can’t quite put my finger on if it has improved, but it’s mildly jarring in an otherwise excellent package.

I found myself selecting Battery mode instead of Drive when starting up and heading off, with its focus on energy recovery through more aggressive regenerative braking. It makes the car easier to drive and, as the name suggests, helps fuel economy.

It’s not as refined a system as the equivalent Corolla hatch, which itself is lighter by nearly 100kg and a bit quicker as a result. But among its peers it’s the default hybrid choice.

Elsewhere, it’s very quiet and easy to cover long distances within, a little bit of rush from the large rear-vision mirrors notwithstanding.

Can a Toyota Corolla Cross tow?

You can tow with a Corolla Cross but it’s hardly a game-changer. Whether the trailer has brakes or not, you’re limited to 750kg, which is a very small trailer with a few bits and bobs for the tip or maybe a jet ski or small boat.

We wouldn’t recommend the Corolla Cross as a regular tow car.

Should I buy a Toyota Corolla Cross?

The Corolla Cross is terrific if you’re looking for a very solid small SUV without it being overtly SUV-ish. Not many are in this segment, but you see what I mean. While it’s not any more accommodating than the Corolla hatch – although it has a bigger boot and more head room – it’s more practical, particularly if you have mobility dramas (although the Corolla sedan exists…).

With hybrid power and economy, a reasonable return for the 2026 price increase and Toyota reliability and ease of ownership, it’s one for those who don’t want to have to think about car ownership too hard. But it’s also fun to drive, even in front-wheel-drive form.

Having said all that, I still consider the $2500 more expensive all-wheel-drive GXL a better bet and still the clear pick of the range.
