The 2026 MG 4 Urban will become the brand's cheapest electric vehicle when it arrives in showrooms next month, priced from $31,990 drive-away.

Despite sharing the same model name as the existing rear- and all-wheel-drive MG 4, the front-wheel-drive MG 4 Urban sits on a new platform, with a larger body, unique styling, and smaller battery packs.

It undercuts the least expensive BYD Dolphin, which is listed from $29,990 plus on-road costs, but sits above $32,000 drive-away in all states and territories of Australia bar the Northern Territory.

The MG 4 Urban does not rival the current most affordable electric car on price, the BYD Atto 1, which is listed at $23,990 plus on-road costs.

Other competitors in the segment include the GWM Ora, which is available for $33,990 drive-away, and the GAC Aion UT, priced from $30,990 drive-away for the first 600 examples.

Full pricing and specifications for the range are yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed there will be a choice between 43kWh and 54kWh battery packs, with claimed WLTP driving ranges of 323km and 415km, respectively.

The MG 4 Urban supports DC charging for a claimed 10 to 80 per cent recharge in 30 minutes.

The MG 4 Urban is larger than the rear-wheel-drive MG 4, and similar to a Toyota Corolla, at 4395mm long and 2750mm in wheelbase, compared to the Dolphin at 4290mm long and 2700mm in wheelbase.

The existing MG 4 will remain on sale in an updated form, offering a choice of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with a 64kWh battery, deleting the 51kWh and 77kWh options found previously.

Model Year 2026 examples of the original-shape MG 4 have not reached Australian shores, with MY25 models currently in runout, listed at $36,032 drive-away for the entry-level Excite 51 in NSW, according to the MG website.

Further specifications will be announced for the MG 4 Urban in the coming days.
